The Fourth gets my Middle Finger!
Celebrate the Fourth of July?
Not this kid. Not this year.
And maybe not ever again.
Why?
Because I’m mad.
I’m mad as hell about what has happened to our nation.
But what’s worse, I’m mad about what we aren’t: what America has never really achieved.
I’m not mad just because of Trump--although he is a despicable human being.
No--I’m mad as hell because of us.
Americans.
In 250 years, we have made a lot of progress, and now, we’re flushing it straight down the shitter. Which tells me that we haven’t really progressed at all.
The Founders, all wealthy, white men, declared independence because they were greedy: they no longer wanted to pay taxes to the King. After fighting a seven-year long war to defend the colonies, the King was broke, and put taxes on the colonies to help pay for it, but these greedy white men would have none of it. So they declared their independence, claiming that “all men are created equal.”
Eleven years later, after thousands of poor folks died to win freedom from the King, those same wealthy white men wrote a Constitution: the legal framework for the new nation--and deliberately refused to acknowledge that “all men are created equal.” In fact, they were such chicken-shits, they wrote into the Constitution a way to count slaves as 3/5 of a man, permitting the institution of slavery to continue without even mentioning it. These rich snobs wanted to keep their slaves: the only one who didn’t have slaves was John Adams--all the rest owned and kept slaves even after the Constitution was ratified.
How can we call George Washington the Father of our country knowing the mother fucker not only kept slaves, but after the Revolution, this sumbitch captured his own runaway slaves and sent them back to Mount Vernon!
Fuck you George!
Eighty years later, the nation had to fight an ugly war over slavery, with more than 800,000 dying to end it, but that didn’t end the racism American Christians tied to slavery. The KKK rose up, and Jim Crow and segregation, and all the racial hatred continued.
Meanwhile, American women were also being denied every citizen’s right: no right to vote, no right to property--nothing.
How can American women celebrate independence they’ve never fully had?
Before 1920, American women had no right to vote.
Before 1965, American women had no right to birth control.
Before 1973, American women had no right to an abortion.
Before 1973, American women had no right to serve on a jury.
Before 1978, American women had no right to work if pregnant.
Before 1988, American women had no right to a business loan of their own.
After 2022, American women had no right to an abortion.
And you know it was so much more than that. And we’re going backwards.

It took us another hundred years to finally pass some voting rights and civil rights, but things still weren’t equal or fair--but for the first time in 200 years, they were moving forward.
Slowly, but forward.
Then came Reagan, and Bush W. and his war on terrorism and spying on us. And then Trump, the worst traitor we’ve ever seen.
We have gone backwards so quickly: our Congress is crooked, our courts are corrupt, and We the People are too busy to give a damn. Too busy paying bills or too busy watching the latest TikTok video, but the verdict is in: Americans no longer care--at least not enough of us care.
The elections coming up could be stolen away in a heartbeat, and the Republic will be dead, and all because we are ignorant of our history and too lazy to learn.
So yeah--I’m mad. I’m mad as hell.
